Book Report Directions – FICTION ONLY!

Book Report – READ all of the instructions before you begin writing the report!

DO NOT WRITE something like this: The book I read was called Gone with the Wind. It was written by Margaret Mitchell. It is about the Civil War. The main character’s name was Scarlett O’Hara.

Begin the report with a well-written sentence that states the author, title, type of book, main idea of the book, etc. (Underline or italicize the title. Make sure you use correct capitalization.)

Example: In Gone with the Wind Margaret Mitchell introduces Scarlett O’Hara as a Southern belle whose courage and strong personality make her a survivor of the Civil War.

Write a summary of the book’s plot, but include your own opinions as you write.

➢ Write in PARAGRAPHS!

➢ Use descriptive adjectives, vivid verbs, and appropriate adverbs.

➢ Do not write short choppy sentences.

Do not start every sentence with the subject and verb. Start some with prepositional phrases or adverb clauses, like this: During the night was when most of the burglaries occurred, so James and John came up with a plan to catch the dastardly criminals. While John was across the street watching for burglars from the outside, James kept an eye out for any who might creep into the house through the back door.

Make sure the report includes these elements:
1. Main characters, their personalities, characteristics, and physical descriptions
2. State the main conflict or goal
3. Main events leading to the climax
4. Resolution of the conflict or how the goal was attained
5. Your opinions regarding the characters and the story line

Your goal is to write a well-written report that convinces me that you read and understood the book.

PLAGIARISM= F for the report and an N in conduct

How long should it be?
Typed, double-spaced, size 12 font Times or something similar (plain), 2-3 pages
